I say then, walk by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
The Houston Chronicle tells of a young man who was bit on the lip by a rattlesnake while trying to kiss it. The 21 year old Matt George caught the snake in Arizona and tried to make it a pet.
While friends were at his home in Yacolt, Washington, Matt grabbed the snake behind the head and kissed it. His friends told him “you're being stupid” but George replied, “It’s ok, I do it all the time.” When he tried it again, the snake bit him under his mustache. He lost consciousness, went limp, and his eyes rolled back in his head before being life-flighted to a hospital in Portland, Oregon.
Although Matt survived the ordeal, his bizarre actions illustrate a much greater spiritual problem.
Too often we play with sin as if it is our friend or something that we can control. We are wrong on both accounts. Sin is deadly and it will bite us. Temptation is a spiritual snake that is more deadly than a rattler.
Don’t smooch with temptations… you’ll get bit and you’ll be sorry.
Our Heavenly Father who knows what sin will do to us has instructed us to run from sin. Don’t play with it, run from it. But running away from sin is not enough: We must run to something. 1 Timothy 6:11 and 1 Timothy 2:2 tell us when we run from sin we must run to righteousness.
God always has a plan of escape when the “serpent” shows up. God always has something for you to do that is righteous. Make it your goal today to flee temptation and chase after righteousness.
